Seeing Red

Whether you’re hitched, ditched, single or ready to mingle, Valentines Day is going to arrive on February 14th, whether you like it or not.  Even if you are currently on speaking terms with cupid, V-Day can bring awkward moments, stir up feelings, and just be downright weird.  Whatever this Monday brings into your life,  celebrate all sorts of love with the colour red.   Its cute cousin, the colour pink, is appropriate too, but red is bold, beautiful and shouldn’t be feared.

If you’re scared of  red, start out small.  Try a red statement accessory and make it the focus of your outfit.  A ring, necklace, purse or scarf is a perfect way to incorporate the seductive colour into your wardrobe.  Be careful of piling on too many red accessories that are the exact same hue; if you’re not careful, you could fall into “matchy-matchy” territory.

If you’re anything like me and have what my mother calls “porcelain doll skin,” (which is really just a nice way of saying that I’m pale), try to keep large amounts of bright red away from your face.  A fire engine red cardigan will draw attention to any blemishes or redness on your skin, and will highlight normally unnoticed imperfections.  This however, does not mean that porcelain dolls can’t wear red.  Experiment with different shades and try a softer shade of red, mixed with other colors that balance out its vibrancy.

If you have olive or darker skin, red can be a beautiful way to complement your complexion and draw attention to your natural beauty. From blazers to bangles, the world is your oyster.  Don’t forget to pull out your vixen red nail polish; Valentines day is the perfect excuse to give yourself a manicure.

If you’re looking for a splash of colour on your lower half, try wearing red on your feet.  Boots, flats and loafers are a fun and easy way to incorporate red into your wardrobe.  You can also experiment with red tights to add a pop of colour and  stay warm at the same time.

Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, there is the always confident little red dress.  There is something classic, yet sexy, about a woman in a red dress.   We all know that red is one of the most eye catching colors, so what better way to catch the eye of a potential Valentine this year?  Go on, break some hearts and show ‘em some red.
