In the heart of Vancouver’s historic Gastown district lies a distinctly more forward-thinking world: Planet Claire Sustainable Fashion, which brings eco and ethically-sound products to the fashionistas on the West Coast of Canada with a little bit of granola in ‘em.
Owner Claire Burke hand-picks men’s and women’s items that are flattering to both figure and planet, choosing designs in eco-friendly fabrics such as organic cotton, soy, seaweed, bamboo & recycled materials. “The most important thing to me is that everything is ethically produced, so I know for sure everything I carry is made either by the designer with their own two hands, or that they paid someone fair wages for their work, [and designers are] mostly local because I do want to decrease my carbon footprint.”- says Clare
The benefits of using sustainable materials are insurmountable, beyond the obvious: natural fibres are generally more durable and retain strength, giving clothing a new level of quality. “Plus, people who are paying attention to this kind of thing are also generally paying attention to the greater scheme of things, so they’re looking for quality of craftsmanship, they’re looking for dyes that are biodegradable and organic and that wear better on your skin—hemp and organic cotton are amazing for sensitive skin,” adds Claire.
The success of Planet Claire and other eco-friendly clothing boutiques on the West Coast confirm that people are indeed paying attention. “I think that Vancouver and BC in general are super forward-thinking in that eco-direction, more than any other place in Canada. People in BC are trying to make best choices not just for themselves and consumers, but for the world.”
